Recently, we shared topics that Andrew White, Distinguished VP Analyst at Gartner, observed were top of mind at the 2019 Gartner Data & Analytics Summit in Sydney, Australia. We discussed the concept of “Trust in Data” and offered suggestions for presentations at Gartner 2019 Summit in Orlando that will help you add trust in your enterprise data.

As I mentioned last time, none of these surprised me much. In many ways, these are precisely the topics we would expect (and hope) to hear being discussed amongst attendees at the event because they cut past the surface topics of “digital transformation,” or any other buzzword of the day, and go right to the heart of the business problems that today’s data leaders are addressing – which brings me to the other topic from this list that particularly caught my eye.
One of the most common things we hear from customers is a need for meaningful, actionable data. They are craving accurate, up-to-date information about products, customers, suppliers and more, on which they can make informed decisions. While most conversations begin with a particular business need, like improving the quality and accessibility of a product catalog, better understanding of customers, or more easily managing and onboarding suppliers, as discussions evolve it is clear that most are searching for more. They are looking for a strategy that addresses the entire information lifecycle from integration/creation to publication/syndication to business intelligence.
They need Data Intelligence.
The Gartner Summit is aptly named – and the programming addresses topics that fuel a Data Intelligence strategy. However, too often, enterprises, vendors, and, even consultants, ignore the key part of the Summit’s name that contributes most to Data Intelligence. The “&”. Seriously, it’s not an afterthought. And, it’s not a convenient way to rebrand the convergence of the two, separate events that Gartner combined. It’s an integral part of any organization’s data journey. You see, achieving an intelligent data management strategy requires a focus on BOTH Data & Analytics.
We know. Sometimes it is difficult to focus on both sides of the “&”. There might be organizational boundaries that conflict with that focus. There is no silver bullet technology platform that addresses all of the elements required. And, again, too few of us acknowledge the need to view the information lifecycle in its entirety.
