What is Data Virtualisation?

Data Virtualisation is a data integration approach. It leverages specialist Data Virtualisation software to present data held in multiple locations, schemas and formats as if it were held in a single location, without physically moving the data. Data Virtualisation technologies provide a logical data layer and a means of managing access, security and governance centrally. Data Virtualisation has a broad range of applications (e.g. as an alternative to ETL and data warehousing) to provide a 360 degree view of a core business entity (e.g. customer) or to enable virtual Master Data Management.
