Case Study | Cooke Aquaculture charts a course for successful multi-Domain MDM

The Challenge

Founded in 1985, Cooke Aquaculture has grown from a single salmon farm to the largest private family-owned seafood company in the world. The company’s remarkable growth is fueled by strategic mergers and acquisitions—a model that also presents complex data challenges.

Over the years, onboarding enterprises with diverse systems led to duplicate, siloed, and disjointed data. This fragmentation slowed progress and made it more difficult to glean insights into operations across its various locations and companies. Cooke knew it needed a unified approach to data management to support its ambitious growth.

The Solution

Cooke reached out to Amplifi for advice on how to best implement master data management (MDM). Trust was built from the start, with a complimentary assessment that emphasized MDM best practices. This included the importance of appointing a dedicated product owner and preparing for effective data governance.

Acting on those insights, Cooke appointed an MDM product owner, signifying a crucial first step towards achieving their data goals.

Adopting a Multi-Domain Approach

With initial improvements underway, Cooke turned to Amplifi for an advisory engagement. The company chose Semarchy xDM for its flexibility and scalability, yet needed guidance to fully leverage the platform.

As a seasoned Semarchy partner, Amplifi brought extensive experience to the project, especially in navigating the terrain of Multi-domain MDM. We helped Cooke understand how to leverage shared attributes across domains like Product, Customer, and Vendor for valuable insights.

Amplifi also supplied ‘hands on the keyboard’ support to configure the Semarchy platform for Cooke’s pressing data needs—including resolving duplicate customer addresses and streamlining processes for data onboarding during mergers.

Training and enablement were also crucial components. Over several months, Amplifi equipped the MDM product owner with essential knowledge of Semarchy’s capabilities and data governance best practices.

Reflecting on the experience, Jim Campbell, Sr. Data Governance Specialist at Cooke, shared, "Working with Amplifi not only shortened the learning curve for our team but also empowered us from the start. The consultants were always there to answer our questions and guide us towards self-sufficiency, an important element in our MDM program."

The Result

With Amplifi’s support, Cooke is now on the path to establishing a new standard in data management, positioned for long-term success.

According to Adam Todd, Vice President of Information Technology for Cooke, “We knew we needed a strong foundation to minimize any risks and ensure our data efforts aligned with business goals.”

He added, “From our initial conversations to the full engagement, Amplifi proved pivotal in validating our data model design, equipping us for Multi-domain MDM, and laying the groundwork for successful data governance.”
