What is data quality assessment?

A Data Quality Assessment involves analysis of one or more datasets or subsets in order to understand and report on the overall level of quality of that data. The process of carrying out an assessment typically involves workshops with key stakeholders, during which important data quality rules and measures are identified (aligned to the six data quality dimensions - see Data Quality). Data is then profiled, often using specialist data quality tools, against both generic data quality metrics and those metrics identified by the business stakeholders. The results of a data quality assessment can be used to drive further business activities such as data cleansing and ongoing data quality monitoring.
